What is fertility support?

Fertility physiotherapy is supportive care, not fertility treatment. It sits alongside your gynaecologist or fertility specialist and focuses on the physical factors that affect comfort and pelvic function during this time.

That includes abdominal and pelvic scar tissue from previous surgery, overactive pelvic floor muscles, painful intercourse or penetration, endometriosis-related pain and the physical toll of repeated procedures and long months of waiting.

Common symptoms

  • Painful periods or ongoing pelvic pain
  • Pain with intercourse, penetration or internal examinations
  • Tight or tethered abdominal scars
  • Persistent low back or hip pain
  • A body that feels constantly tense
  • Difficulty sleeping and switching off

What causes it

  • Previous abdominal or pelvic surgery
  • Endometriosis, adenomyosis or PCOS
  • Chronic pelvic floor muscle overactivity
  • Sustained physical and emotional stress
  • Repeated invasive procedures

How physiotherapy helps

Treatment focuses on what physiotherapy can genuinely influence: soft tissue and scar mobility, pelvic floor tone, hip and abdominal movement, pain, and nervous-system regulation.

Sessions are timed around your cycle or treatment protocol, with deep abdominal work avoided at sensitive points. Above all, it's care that treats you as a person rather than a cycle number.

  • Abdominal and pelvic scar mobilisation
  • Myofascial release and gentle manual therapy
  • Pelvic floor downtraining for overactivity
  • Breathing and relaxation strategies
  • Cycle- and protocol-appropriate exercise guidance
  • Support before and after procedures

When to seek treatment

  • When trying to conceive with pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Before starting an IVF or IUI cycle
  • After abdominal or pelvic surgery
  • If intercourse or penetration is painful
  • After pregnancy loss, when you feel ready
