About musculoskeletal physiotherapy

Musculoskeletal physiotherapy covers the muscles, joints, tendons and nerves that let you move — and the pain that arrives when something in that system is irritated, overloaded or underprepared for what you're asking of it.

Much of what I see is the result of modern life: long hours at a desk, a sudden weekend of activity after a sedentary week, poor sleep, high stress, or a niggle that was ignored until it stopped being ignorable. Pain like this is common and it is treatable, but it responds far better to assessment and active rehabilitation than to repeated passive treatment alone.

Who this is for

  • Anyone with new, recurring or long-standing pain
  • Desk-based workers with neck, back or shoulder pain
  • People recovering from orthopaedic surgery
  • Those with headaches related to the neck
  • Anyone wanting to stay strong and mobile as they age
  • People who've been given a scan result they don't understand

Common symptoms

If any of these sound familiar, an assessment is worthwhile — you don't need to wait until symptoms are severe.

  • Stiffness and pain first thing in the morning
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, standing or repetitive tasks
  • Pins and needles, numbness or referred pain into a limb
  • Weakness or giving way in a joint
  • Reduced range of movement
  • Recurring headaches starting at the base of the skull
  • Pain that disturbs your sleep

Conditions treated

  • Low back pain, sciatica and disc-related pain
  • Neck pain, whiplash and cervicogenic headaches
  • Shoulder pain, rotator cuff problems and frozen shoulder
  • Hip and gluteal tendon pain
  • Knee pain, including osteoarthritis and post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Tennis and golfer's elbow
  • Ankle and foot pain
  • Post-operative orthopaedic rehabilitation

What to expect

01

Getting the full picture

When it started, what makes it better or worse, what you've already tried, your work and activity demands, and screening questions to rule out anything needing medical referral.

02

Clinical assessment

Movement, joint mobility, muscle strength and length, neurological testing where indicated, and functional testing of the tasks that actually bother you.

03

Hands-on treatment

Joint mobilisation, soft tissue and trigger-point work, dry needling where appropriate, taping and stretching — used to reduce pain and restore movement quickly.

04

Rehabilitation that sticks

A concise home programme, ergonomic and load advice, and progressive strengthening so the problem doesn't simply come back in three months.

How physiotherapy helps

Faster relief

Manual therapy combined with exercise consistently outperforms either approach used alone.

Fewer recurrences

Addressing strength, mobility and load habits reduces the chance of the same problem returning.

Clarity about your pain

Understanding what a scan result actually means is often the most reassuring part of the appointment.

Independence

You leave with tools you can use yourself, not a schedule of endless appointments.
